On Friday, Dec 5, students attended an equity assembly led by the Student Equity Team. This assembly was called Artful Belonging, which was led by Rebecca Bellingham and Veronica Scott, who are authors, artists, and teachers. They talked about how food connects people from different cultures and backgrounds in many different ways.
Students share what foods they find to be a memory or a comfort food.
“Ice cream because it’s always nice on hot days and reminds me of the summer when my family and I would go to the beach and get ice cream,” junior Damian Sebens said.
Some students seemed to connect with other students about foods that they find comforting or have a story behind them.
“Connecting with people about their special foods taught me that everyone has their own food story,” junior Cece Szweda said. “It was cool to hear because I never thought about how we have connections to food.”
The main goal of the assembly was that food can help foster belonging and understanding.
“The main goal was to teach students to listen and engage with other students about something interesting,” Principal Steve Lodes said.
Other students have many different food choices and have many stories and memories behind it.
“My mom’s chili is a good memory, but there’s no story behind it. It’s just a comfort food and reminds me of my family,” freshman Lily Miller said.
During the assembly, students were asked to share memories they have about food and how it connects to memory and heritage. The assembly was a lesson for everybody to listen to each other and engage with each other.
