As we move into the new semester, both students and teachers look back on their favorite memories and accomplishments. Entering the second half of the school year brings challenges, opportunities, and excitement. Some people’s favorite events this year include sports games, homecoming, and activities before Thanksgiving break.
“One of my favorite parts of the school year so far was going to the football games in the fall. I thought they were really fun because of everyone’s energy,” sophomore Vincent Kenney said.
For seniors, the events they went to were for the last time, whether they were watching or participating. Fall sports came to an end this semester, wrapping up the season for senior athletes at the G.
“My favorite part of swimming this year was probably my last sectionals because it was really fun the whole day and I PR’d in all of my races, which was a great way to end my season,” senior Clea Walters said. “I’m happy because I have more free time now that swimming is over, but I’ve been swimming since I was 6 and it’s hard to move on from something I’ve been doing for almost my entire life.”
Some of the biggest challenges for students this year were entering advanced classes, which can have a heavy workload.
Freshman Lily Miller is in an advanced class for her grade, taking Honors Geometry this year.
“My hardest class this year is probably Honors Geometry because it’s a lot to learn at once and the homework is a difficult workload compared to last year,” Miller said.
There are many events to look forward to next semester, including graduation, new sports, the spring musical, spring break, and more.
“I am most excited to be playing Velma in the musical Chicago second semester. This semester, the winter musical Alice by Heart was also super fun,” sophomore Clara Svoboda said.
Teachers also had new experiences and grew throughout the semester. They are becoming better people themselves while also helping students to become better. This year, English teacher Alli Brimmer took on a student teacher.
“This year, I had a student teacher for the first time, and I think I have grown as a mentor through this experience,” Brimmer said.
Her advice for students as they enter the coming semester embraces the idea of doing their best and growing.
“There is no such thing as a perfect student. Focus on progress, not perfection,” Brimmer said.
Lastly, the end of the month brings a fun end and reward for all the hard work put in, with the opportunity to go to the Snoball dance. All grades are able to attend on January 31st, with tickets being sold the week prior.
Senior Keira Block is attending with her friends and is excited to go during her last semester of high school.
“I got my dress from Altar’d State and think it’s very fitting for the Wintery theme and time of year,” Block said. “My favorite part about going to all dances is getting ready and going to dinner with my friends.”
