The ceramics team has been working hard all year to perfect their projects, and it is finally time to wrap them up for the year.
One of the projects that they had was to make 3 different bowls to donate to Empty Bowls. To achieve this, they had to take on the challenge of handling the wheel. Some say it was extremely difficult and irritating, while others say it was a great learning experience.
Senior Derek Coatzozon says it wasn’t easy to center the bowl on the wheel. “It was a relatively easy project, but the part I struggled the most with was getting the bowl centered so that my bowls don’t come out lopsided,” he said. “My thought process was to make a tiger eye look for one of my bowls, so I used a dark brown with yellow layered over it,” he said.
Junior Maddie Gajewski disliked this project because she couldn’t get the hang of it.
“I did not like the bowl project at all. Having to make the sides super thin while having to keep it steady was literally impossible. I ended up only doing one bowl, but the color scheme I chose went really well. I picked a pink, blue, and orange-toned finish.”
Junior Cece Szweda did not like the bowl project either.
“It was very hard and annoying to do, especially with fake nails on, so pro tip, no ceramics for you if you like wearing fake nails,” she said. “Another thing that was challenging is layering colors together; you could barely even tell what the color was going to be after firing it in general.”
“I was hoping to get a purple color, but after firing it, I was pretty disappointed that it turned out more of a brown and red purple.”
It seems like people weren’t the biggest fans of making ceramic bowls on the wheel.
A second project the ceramics class did was something called trompe-l’œil, which means fool the eye in French. For this project, they had to create an object and make it look realistic enough to the point where someone may think it is a real version of said object.
“I think this was the most fun project we have done throughout this semester,” Cortazon said.
“I made spaghetti and meatballs in a bowl, I painted it and added a little bit of texture to the meatballs,” he said.
“I made a pie because my friend Fiona said it was easy to do, it turned out really good,” Szweda said. “At first, it was supposed to be an apple pie, but by the end of it, it became a cherry pie.”
“I decided to make an aloe plant since they are my favorite type of plant and my room is filled with plants,” Gajewski said.
It seems like everyone did in fact enjoy this project.
