On Feb. 7, Greendale High School’s Acapella group went to Oak Creek High School to compete in the International Championship of High School Acapella (ICHSA) competition.
In order to compete at this competition they must have months of preparation. In September they recorded themselves singing two songs and then sent them in for judging, and then it was announced in November that they were selected.
For the competition they had to perform three songs in under 10 minutes followed by choreography. The songs were “The Weather” by Lawrence , “Sunshine” by Micheal Jackson, and “Breaking Dishes” by Rihanna which was arranged by junior Holden Griffin.
The ICHSA competition was a success for G-Harmony, as they won third place which is the highest they have gotten in all of the years they have competed there, and they also received two awards, best arrangement by Griffin and sophomore Clara Svoboda winning best solo.
“Winning best arrangement at the competition was one of my favorite moments, I was so happy,” Griffin said. “Mr. Jones has helped me so much throughout this season and I am so thankful for it. G-Harm would not be where we are today without him.”
There were eight other groups at the competition from all different of schools in Wisconsin.
“I was so excited to be there and I felt a lot of joy. I loved watching all of the other groups and learning from them was such a privilege,” Svoboda said.
After seeing the results of the competition it gives G-Harm the opportunity to improve and make adjustments to win first place.
“It was great to see that we belong with the top groups – we don’t have to make any drastic changes,” choir teacher Michael Jones said. “That being said, I think we can focus on two big areas next time – adding more details to how we’re singing our arrangements to create bigger impacts, and to adjust and start choreography earlier in the process to give us time to not only sound confident, but also look confident and engaged.”
