Here at GHS, students are frequently on their devices. While technology is an essential part of your life at school, some people take it to an extreme and use it way more than they should. Walking in the hallways here at GHS, there are a bunch of kids who are just glued to their phones and looking down as they walk in the hallways, and many teachers think this is a bad habit.
They think kids should spend more time away from their phones. “I think it is so important to be active. My family and I go on lots of hikes or sporting events. I like to spend time in my workshop, stay active, or read a book and relax. The device can bring so much stress and anxiety,” Access teacher Dan Rogaczewski said.
These are some things that help students stay away from devices in their free time.
“I play basketball in my free time, and it really helps me stay away from distractions. I can go hours playing it without going on my devices,” junior Ricardo Otano-Cervantes said.
Otano-Cervantes is a basketball player here at GHS. He said he does use his device often outside of basketball practice. He believes that using his device too much is messing up with his outside activity outside of being at basketball practice.
But not everyone is like Otano- Cervantes.
”I do use my phone more than I should; I believe it is the main thing that I use in my free time. I also work a lot which I am using my phone most of the time because I take a lot of calls at my dealership, which I work at,” senior Ahmed Gamar said.
He said he does watch a lot of TikTok, and that is what makes his screen time look really bad on his phone.
“I do use my device more than I want to, but when I don’t have anything to do, it is really the first thing I go to,” Gamar said.
Rogaczewski thinks kids should be more productive if they stay off their phones.
“I think about how much I can get done in a day, being as productive as possible. That would change if I just sat there and doom scrolled, Rogaczewski said.
