GHS has a variety of amazing after school clubs and programs and clubs that students can participate in. One club that deserves more recognition is the Debate Club. It takes place every Monday after school, and it is not only an academic and educational time to spend a Monday afternoon, it is also a fun experience.
“I enjoy debating topics that both sides are very passionate about,” freshman Benjamin Wool said.
Along with fun, debate club introduces students to new ways of learning that they wouldn’t get in a school day. Students are always welcome and encouraged to learn more about debating but also life lessons that will benefit them in future social interactions.
“Other students should join debate so that they can be introduced to a variety of real world problems and the different perspectives and facts surrounding those subjects, plus they should join in order to become more confident in confronting opposing viewpoints and public speaking,” senior Noah Thomson said.
Every Monday, Debate Club has a structured routine to ensure that students have a productive and educational debate along with lots of fun.
“In Debate Club, we start off with spending a few minutes figuring out our topic. Then we go into groups in order to do research and prepare our arguments,” Thomson said. “After that both sides do opening statements, then it’s open floor, both sides can speak to one another to provide evidence, rebuttals, and cross examination, and finally closing statements before the moderators decide who is the winner!”
Along with amazing dedicated debaters and moderators in Debate Club they also have a dedicated adviser who shows up every week and is always ready to support students.
“I enjoy seeing students put their critical thinking, argument, and research skills to use on topics of their choice. It’s enlightening to hear what everyone thinks about various topics,” adviser Erin Schwane said.
Debate club meets in the library connect space on Mondays from 3-4 between winter break and spring break. Students are always encouraged to join, whether it’s for a fun new hobby, learning new skills, or meeting new people who are genuinely interested in the topics that others enjoy.
“Debate club is fun! It gives students a chance to think and talk with peers about issues they care about and choose, all in a low stress environment,” Schwane said.
