During the lunch period, many juniors and seniors take advantage of the oppportuntiy for open lunch. Open lunch gives students the chance to leave the school for lunch to go to their homes or go out to food places around Greendale.
For many students, they choose home during this time period, making it very cost effective and more convenient and enjoyable to eat home cooked meals instead of school lunches.
“For lunch, I go to my apartment since it is very close to the school. I usually cook something when I get there,” junior Maria Sol La Torre said.
Some students do not have the opportunity to go to their homes because of distance and the lack of time. Fortunately, Greendale has many different food places to choose from such as Chick Fil A, Qdoba, Raising Canes, Noodles and Company, Tropical Smoothie, and many more. Having so many of these popular food places nearby is very convenient as well because it is time effective and is easier to simply pick up a delicious meal.
“I usually go get food with one or two people during lunch, it varies where we go,” senior Lauren Gilbert said.
Although having the opportunity for open lunch, there are a couple downsides to it. With only 30 minutes of a lunch period, it is very difficult to have time to eat when you go out or have a chance to sit down when going back home.
“I think that we need to have more time for lunch because I feel like I have to rush and I don’t have enough time to catch up with my friends which I don’t see during the day,” junior Brooklyn Gokey said.
Even going to the fast food restaurants has its downsides. It can get very expensive, especially with how fast prices for fast food has been going up the past few years.
Even though most people only have 30 minutes for lunch, there are some students that have a release beforehand. This gives them more time to relax from school and gives them an advantage to have more time to eat or make a meal at home.
“I have a 5th hour release and it is super convenient because I am able to relax and have a proper amount of time to eat,” La Torre said.
Even though there might not be much time for lunch, many students have appreciated the opportunity of open lunch.
