The film Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, opened in theaters on March 20, 2026. The movie follows a sixth-grade science teacher named Ryland Grace who has a chance to save the world. He wakes up in space with no memory, but soon learns why he is there.
The new Sci-fi movie has been a hit among GHS students.
“I was skeptical at first because I wasn’t sure if it was all about space, but it’s actually a really good movie with a bunch of sad and happy moments,” sophomore Olivia Goetzke said.
On Grace’s journey in space, he meets an alien named Rocky. He is a five-legged engineer from the planet Erid. Together, they make a translation system and become really good friends.
Junior Elosie Ritchie cried during the new film.
“I did not cry over Grace, I cried over Rocky. I fell in love with his character. I cried my eyes out when we thought he was going to die. I did not want to see the death of a rock. I also cried when Grace realized Rocky’s ship was made out of xenonite,” Ritche said. “I thought Grace was going to go back to earth and let Rocky die, and I could not handle the possibility of him dying after the filmmakers already made us think he was going to die.”
Senior Keira Block read the book prior to seeing the movie and liked the book better.
“I think the movie could have included more details about the math and science on the mission because that’s what made the book really interesting,” Block said. “I finished the book on the same day I saw the movie. The plot was really similar, but the book was more detailed and stressed the importance of the mission.”
Sophomore Clara Svoboda thought the movie could’ve been shorter.
“The only bad thing about the movie was that it was over two and a half hours long. I think some of the space scenes could’ve been cut short, especially with movie theaters lately having over 30 minutes of previews before the movie even starts,” Svoboda said.
