The Backrooms movie was released in theatres on May 29 and was number one at the box office. The movie is a Sci-fi/ Horror film. It is about a therapist who goes into a furniture store leading into an alternate dimension called the ‘Backrooms’ to save her patient, Clark. It is based off a Youtube horror series that became popular in 2019.
Some students are considering seeing it for various reasons, one of which is because they enjoy horror movies and are excited to see how major studios have put their twist on an already popular concept.
“I really like the adrenaline rush horror movies give me,” junior Brooklyn Gokey said.
Others have prior knowledge of the backrooms and are excited to see it come to theaters rather than just on Youtube. The internet has helped popularize the movie a lot so many students are familiar with the movie’s plot.
“I’ve been seeing a ton of ads about the movie and I’ve seen a lot of videos about the Backrooms on Tiktok,” junior Lauren Gilbert said.
As of opening weekend, the film has done extremely well. The film broke the A24’s studio and genre record with $118 million. It has already become the studio’s biggest and most successful movie.
Some students have already seen the movie on opening weekend and had some positive things to say about the movie, they enjoyed the nostalgia and the entire plot over all.
“It was great! The movie was very interesting and somewhat lore accurate to the plot of the original found footage videos on YouTube,” freshmen Quinn Gephart said. “I really enjoyed seeing it because it’s been interesting to me since it appeared but mostly because the OG picture came from ‘hobby town’ in Oshkosh which is where I grew up, before it was renovated.”
Many students at GHS who saw the movie on opening weekend did not enjoy it as much.
“I did not really like the movie as much. I thought it was a little confusing and it was not as scary as I hoped it would be,” Gilbert said.
Senior Grace Witynski shares a similar opinion about the dislike of the movie.
“The plot was very hard to keep up with, and I was expecting a little more. I have seen worse movies but I would not recommend this one,” Witynski said.
The Backrooms movie will continue to grow and become very successful over the next couple weeks and students will continue to have differing opinions.
