Model UN students traveled to UW-Madison last meet to participate in a Model UN conference. At the conference they participated as multiple different countries to represent such as Ukraine and Portugal. They were recreating certain aspects of Model UN such as the Security Council and General Assembly.
At the conference they split off into groups and worked together to recreate certain aspects of the UN conferences.
“I was part of the WHO (World Health Organization),” junior Ruaa Barbarawi said. “We discussed ways to mitigate the effects of COVID and discussed other aspects of the WHO.”
People had different reasons why they joined Model UN and what it can do for them in their life.
“I joined Model UN because it would look good on college applications,” freshman Nuoci Li said. “The major I’m hoping for is similar to what happens in Model UN, so it sounded like a great opportunity for me.”
Model UN can give students many opportunities later in life and looks good on college applications. Sometimes students are unprepared for the conference and need to learn more during the event.
“I think the hardest part was the lack of information,” Li said. “Everyone around me looked so prepared, and they were all saying specific phrases that I didn’t understand. After getting used to it, it got easier.”
Students loved getting to know each other at the conference after it was over.
“My favorite moment was probably the end of the conference,” Li said. “The people in my delegation were really nice, and we just started talking about our schools.”
Overall Model UN is a great club for students to join and can help with countless skills later in life.
