In March, GHS put on the musical Chicago. The show is known for its big dance numbers, theater department, and famous songs like “All That Jazz” and its story about fame and crime in the 1920s. The production brought together students from different grades, each with their own role in making the show happen.
Alexandra Alcorn, a junior who played Kitty and a dancer, explained how being focused is key to learning your role.
“I prepared by staying actively attentive and focusing in rehearsals to better my performance. I also stayed open to comments that could help me improve,” Alcorn said.
Alcorn also expressed how stamina plays a crucial role leading up to a performance.
“The most difficult part of rehearsals would be the stamina for them. There is a lot of focus required, both physically and mentally, and long hours can be very tiring,” Alcorn said.
Deacon Ward, a senior who played the husbands in the ensemble and had a speaking role, shared how he balanced learning his parts and preparing for the state wrestling competition.
“I learned my parts by going to as many practices as I could while preparing for wrestling state,” Ward said.
When asked about the most difficult part of his role, Ward’s answer was spot on.
“I’d say hiding the blood ribbons quick enough and in the correct spots on me with enough length was pretty tuff,” Ward said.
Senior Lucy Mermal who played Roxie Hart and had a unique way of learning her role.
“I rehearsed a lot and experimented with the character and her thoughts and actions in order to really step into her persona,” Mermal said.
Senior David Acamovic, a first time play watcher, was impressed with the production.
“I never went to a film before but I wanted to support my senior friends, I was impressed with how complex the acting is and the props involved too,” Acamovic said.
Mr. Schaetzke, the director of the Chicago production, explained what made the show challenging for the student cast.
“The hardest part of the show was the dance because it isn’t a modern dance style that teens are familiar with,” Schaetzke said.
Putting on a school musical takes more than just talent. For the students of Greendale High School, Chicago was a chance to grow as performers. While the dancing was difficult and the characters were challenging, the cast and crew pulled it off.
