The first semester season of the Flex Basketball League (FBL) is coming to an end, wrapping up a thrilling start with records broken and controversial endings. The season has been action-packed, with the scoring record being broken and an exciting playoff race. The race for yearly awards is also shaping up, including the MVP, LVP, and 6-man.
At the start of the year, when the FBL got started, eight team captains were appointed, with the rest of the league members being put into a draft pool and chosen by a captain. After teams were formed, the schedule was made, and games were played in the gym.
Since then, some teams have taken the league by storm, including the Squad, leading the league with a 13-0 record, already clinching the playoffs with the help of MVP favorite junior Ricardo Cervantes.
“He’s been a huge addition to the team, helping us secure a spot in the playoffs,” senior Jude Bunzel said. “Very glad I drafted him this year.”
Other teams, including the Big Men, Seamen, and Sidekicks, are all fighting for a playoff spot to avoid the play-in, setting up an exciting finish to the season.
Moving there were some exciting finishes to this season. In a match-up between the Squad and Bigmen there was a controversial shot at the end of the half when sophomore Jasin Ademi threw up a shot with questionable time remaining as the buzzer sounded. The shot was later deemed no good by the refs.
“I agree, I don’t think I got the shot off,” Ademi said. “But the refs rigged that game because one of Squad’s players was the ref.”
After reviewing, the shot was deemed no good, and the Big Men went on to lose by one. After the game, the Bigmen appealed the call, which went to the council, where the call was upheld once again, keeping the Squads’ perfect record of 13-0.
Moving on during the season, a huge record was broken by sophomore Aaron Sokolosky as he surpassed the former scoring record, replacing it with a performance to remember, having 37 points and 17 rebounds.
“It’s an honor to hold the new FBL scoring record.” Sokolosky said, “This should cement my name as the best Sokolosky in the bloodline.”
Camden Geittmann has now taken the lead for being the LVP (least valuable player) as his team captain, Jakup Ademi, wants him off the team, claiming he shoots too many bad shots.
“He has great potential,” junior Michael Immel said. “I think we could make him a star player on our Knights roster.”
It has been a great FBL season so far, and students are having a great time playing. As the first semester season of FBL comes to an end, it will be an exciting playoff race and postseason.
