The varsity girls tennis team had a great season, and one of the girls on the team made it to state, sophomore Angela Bogovac. The players on the team have been playing for multiple years and some even plan on carrying this on after high school.
The girls have different ways they prepare their matches.
“From last year to this year, my mentality and confidence has improved a lot. I learned that you don’t win matches by just playing good, you win matches by playing good and with confidence,” senior Gabby Liesen said.
Liesen was happy with how her season went and had many great memories.
“I played doubles with Angel Galusha and I was happy how it went. My favorite moment of the season was senior night where the team celebrated the seniors. My personal best match was against Brookfield East because they were a very good team,” she said.
Freshman Lydia Jacobs played singles and has been playing tennis for a long time.
“I’ve been playing tennis since I was 10, and I plan on playing next year because I had a great time this season and one of my favorite moments was winning conference,” she said.
Bogovac made it all the way to the state tournament, showing her hard work and dedication from the whole season. She was seeded eight and advanced to the 3rd round of the tournament.
“It was exciting, but I was also nervous because it was time to put preparation into the match. I was satisfied with my performance for 60 percent of the tournament,” she said. “I’ve been playing tennis since I was 6 years old, and started playing competitively when I was 11. I enjoy tennis because it’s an individual sport, my losses are mine but so are my wins. The only person I can rely on is me, so my biggest opponent but also support is me.”
She has many goals for next season.
“My goal next season is to get on the podium, place 1st or 2nd which will take a lot of work but it can be done,” Bogovac said.
Junior Tiffani Galusha has goals for next year as well.
“ I got more resilient to not give up and get out and next year I’m moving up. I want to work on more advanced skills and things of that nature,” she said. “The practices can be long so it’s kind of time consuming but it is still very fun. I have taught myself to not give up and think about how the negative thoughts can affect me for the rest of the match. Finally, I play singles.”
Bogavic describes her favorite moment from the season.
“My favorite moment this season was when I won my sectional for my division, and then a few minutes later I dropped the medal into a crack and my whole team was committed to take it out, and eventually it was taken out 20-30 minutes later by Maria,” she said.
This season was about more than just winning, it was about spending time with teammates and improving. All four girls had an amazing time playing, and even though only one made it to state, they all shared the success together.
