With the coming of June, also comes the end of the track season, with state being the first weekend of June. The track team has had a spectacular season, with many PR’s and great meets across the board. The team is sending 19 athletes up to state.
One of the runners that made it to state is school record 100 meter record holder Jonathan Lopez. He is looking forward to performing well at state.
“At State I want to do well and hopefully make finals for both events at State,” Lopez said. “I feel that in the 100 I can podium if I run my races well. In the 4×200 I think we can do the same if everything goes well and we all run well.”
Another part of the state qualifying 4×200 relay is senior Lucas Riechert. He is the leadoff runner for the 4×200, along with Lopez, senior Sean Libal, and sophomore Eli Paul.
“Our goal as a relay is to advance to finals,” Riechert said. “We are not in a good lane but we all believe in our ability and we can shake some of the rankings up at state. We are excited as it’s all our first time at state.”
Sophomore Aviana Jones is on the 4X200 girls relay and thinks their team has a good chance of performing well at state, along with sophomore Rilie Gleesing, senior Addie Patnaude, and freshman Evie Bock.
“My team worked hard to get to state and we want to perform,” Jones said. “We are in the outside lane so it is going to be hard but we want to do our best.”
The GHS pole vault team sends someone to La Crosse back to back years, with this year’s addition featuring junior Logan Pink.
“I’m really excited about going to state,” Pink said. “I worked hard over the offseason to get to state and it paid off. I hope to compete at the meet because it is a hard meet.”
Freshman phenom Evie Bock qualified for a state competition for the second time in her first year, previously qualifying for the state cross country meet, this time qualifying for both the 4×200 and 3200 run.
“I have big goals for state, and I want to PR. I hope it goes well, and I am looking forward to the rest of my high school track career,” she said.
As the season ends, the coaches are proud of the seniors’ hard work and dedication. Multiple school records were broken this season, and their legacies will always be remembered.
