As the beginning of the season kicks off for the Greendale boys’ golf team, the athletes are excited for what they hope is a very successful season. The golf team is off to a great start placing 4th in their last two meets hoping to clean up their scores before sectionals and conference.
The team consists of athletes across all four grades; they have a JV and varsity team. Each team consists of 5-6 athletes, who participate in practice during the week, such as range days and practice rounds at the county courses. They also participate in meets, traveling around to different courses to play against different schools in their division.
Muench talks about his goal for every year. He explains how his goal is always the same, which is to do well, by making the sectional round at golf and winning conference.
“I have the same goals every year…#1 Win Conference and #2 make it to the Sectional Round,” head coach Chris Muench said.
Senior Logan Nowak talks about what a normal practice day looks like for him as a varsity golfer, what he does, and the time it takes him.
“A normal practice for me is either playing 9 holes or going to the range and hitting balls for about an hour, then I’d go chip and putt for another hour,” Nowak said.
Sometimes golfers do not enjoy the courses they play on. Conditions can be rough, greens can be unkept and so can the course. Sophomore Jordan Weber elaborates on his least favorite course and why.
“I don’t like playing meets at whitnall, we practice there all the time and I find the course boring now,” Weber said.
Muench discusses the keys to success for the golf team this year, and what it takes for a golfer to progress through the season, using words like consistency, and how to use highs and lows on the course.
“Consistency is a word that is commonplace in Golf. It’s hard to keep that consistency over the sprint of a 6-week season,” Muench said. “We try to stress taking out the highs and lows of a round and keep a steady approach to course management.”
The Golf team is full steam ahead and ready to turn it up for the rest of the season.
