The girls basketball team is currently halfway through their season, and they have a current record of 7-5.
Most recently on Jan. 9 they lost to New Berlin Eisenhower 72-66.
Many girls on the team take on many roles and responsibilities. Senior Giselle Paszkiewicz is a senior captain and is the leading scorer on the team. Paszkiewicz is a great leader on the court, helping control the game and helping the team improve.
“Our strengths as a team are that we don’t quit even when we are losing by a lot, but I think we need to get better at taking criticism and applying corrections, but I think it will get better because we have a very young team with mostly freshmen,” Paszkiewicz said.
The Woodland Conference has many difficult teams that the girls have faced like Pius, Wisconsin Lutheran, and Pewaukee.
“Since our conference is very competitive and we continue to work hard and overcome obstacles within our conference and changes in our program,” junior Greta Dombrowski said. “One of my favorite games this season was when we played Pewaukee at home. This specific game was fun because of how well we played together as a team and how much we challenged the other team, especially during the first half, where we ended with only being down by 3 at half.”
The coaches have enjoyed coaching the season so far and are looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
“I am always looking for their fundamentals to improve, their game knowledge etc. Sportsmanship is very important to me as a coach. I enjoy coaching well rounded athletes who make their team better as a whole,” girls basketball coach Stacy Sinks said. “This year we are running a new offense and are focusing on playing more intense and better defense. Trying to incorporate getting all our athletes playing on a higher level across the board. We are a very young program and have room for improvement.”
On Tuesday, Jan. 6 the team played Augustine Prep and brought home a win 82-10.
Leading the team in scoring for the season is Paszkiewicz with an average of 11.7 points per game, followed by senior Macey St. Lawrence with an average of 11.6 points per game.
Seniors have mixed feelings about leaving the team behind after this year.
“I’m very sad it’s my last season. Basketball has been a huge part of my life for over 10 years, and it’s really sad knowing that chapter of my life is coming to an end,” St. Lawrence said. “My goal for this season is to just finish senior year playing the best basketball I can, hopefully continuing to put up big numbers. I hope as a team we can make it far into playoffs, and just have fun and do as well as we can.”
Many girls have goals for themselves and the team they hope to achieve during the season.
“One goal I have for this season is cheering for everyone, no matter the outcome of the game. As a team, I think we are strong at rebounding and beating teams in zone defense, but we need to work on running our plays all the way through,” junior Josie Dembosky said.
Upcoming, the girls travel to New Berlin West on Tuesday, Jan 20, and are looking forward to bringing home a win.
